Time is moving along and the final approval for the subdivision on the Carp Ridge is now a little over a month away unless we have some success on this issue. We must generate some letters to the editor of the two major papers in Ottawa or this amazing land will be lost to development.

Last weekend Alex Munter had a story in the Citizen about the development. It gives our efforts a tremendous boost but we must act now. You can view his story on our website if you haven't read it.

Alex states for a major audience what we all know, the development should never have been approved and it should be stopped. To do that fairly he suggests that the City should buy it with money from a special fund created for exactly this kind of situation. This would stop the threat to the ridge and compensate the owner of the land.

If you agree with this its crucial that we get this issue before the city council and the mayor. They must see press on this issue to get it on their agenda.

We are contacting the editorial staff at the Sun to try and get a story in that paper but that will not be enough. We must get letters from concerned citizens into the Sun and the Citizen.

You can read Alex's story and look at the other material on our website but the core of the letters must be the following:

  • The Carp Ridge is a unique and critical natural area that deserves to be protected.
  • The proposed development should never have been approved in 1991 and it should not have been allowed to be re-activated by another developer at this time.
  • Developing that land goes directly in against the Ottawa 20/20 Official Plan for the City of Ottawa: that appears on the city's website. It deals with critical environmental areas and specifically mentions the Carp Ridge.
  • Our civic leaders should take the appropriate action and stop this development quickly and fairly by purchasing the land from the city's special $5 million fund that was established to buy threatened environmental areas.

The story in the Citizen is already 4 days old so these must be submitted as soon as you possibly can. Please forward this to anyone in Ottawa you feel might be supportive of our efforts to support the Carp Ridge area.

For the Citizen send them to letters@thecitizen.canwest.com

For the Sun send to oped@ott.sunpub.com

You should also send a copy to our councilor Elli El -Chantiri (Eli.El-Chantiry@ottawa.ca). His support would also give us a very large boost.

We are all very busy and this will take a bit of your time but its very important that we get these in to the papers as quickly as possible. Don't hesitate to call or email if you have any questions.

Thank you for your time.
